Make Your Own Water Filter
Want to make your own water filter? It’s known as the most affordable way to protect yourself from the harmful contaminants that may have leaked their way into your water supply. Yes, it is possible to come up with your very own water filter using affordable materials that you can find around the house.
You don’t need to spend hours choosing from the myriad of possibilities in the market. You don’t have to spend a lot on a water filter, too. And you’ll feel assured that you know exactly how your water filter does its job.
Why Filter Water?
Filtering water is a task worthy of effort, especially if you have the health and safety of your family in mind. After all, the quality of water these days cannot be trusted, especially in areas with a lot of industrial activities. A lot of contaminants are usually detected in most water supply systems.
With such danger, it is important that you take the necessary precautions to make sure the water you use and drink is clean and pure. But don’t worry, this does not necessarily have to cost you a lot. In fact, you can make your own water filter.
What You Need
There are many possible types of filtration you can use when you make your own water filter. Your choice will determine what materials you would need for the process.
Through this guide, you can come up with a useful and effective water filter using materials that are within your reach. First, you would need two containers at the size that you want your water filter to be, and one of the containers should be cone-shaped.
You can base the size of your desired water filter on your level of water usage. Then you also need a piece of cotton. Aside from that, go to your garden and get yourself some fine sand then some coarse sand too. And while you’re at it, take some gravel as well.
Once you’ve collected your materials, it’s time to start protecting your household from dirty water and its health risks with the help of this process to make your own water filter.
Step 1 Make Your Device
The first step is to prepare the device itself. Take your two containers. The cone shaped one is where you will put the water that needs to be filtered. Then the second container will catch the water as it passes through the filter.
This will contain the clean, filtered water, so make sure that the container itself is clean. The cone-shaped container will be placed on top of the second container. Have them both ready, but first, you have to prepare the filter that you will place on the cone-shaped container.
Step 2 Add Layer 1
In step 2, you will prepare the filter itself. Get your cone-shaped container and put a piece of cotton at the end of its tip or spout end. The cotton has to be large and thick enough to prevent anything other than liquid to pass through.
The cotton will filter out unwanted minerals and bacteria from passing through. This is very important because it will focus on the small, unseen particles that are hiding dangerously in your water.
Step 3 Add Layer 2
Next, in step 3, get the fine sand and add it to the device on top of the cotton. The fine sand takes care of the larger contaminants such as larger minerals. On top of that, it is important in refining the water before it pours into and through the cotton, already filtered.
Step 4 Add Layer 3
Moving on to step 4, get the coarse sand and also add it to the device. This will go on top of the layer of fine sand. The coarse sand can separate the different minerals from the water itself, so as it passes through the water filter, the minerals are more easily filtered out.
Step 5 Add Layer 4
In step 5, you make another layer on top of the layer of coarse sand, this time with the gravel you collected. This works in conjunction with the coarse sand underneath it. Without the gravel, chances are that the fine sand and the cotton won’t filter out minerals as effectively as they can when the layer of gravel is present.
Step 6 Test It!
At this point, you have now been able to make your own water filter and are ready to filter your water with your DIY device. You can put your cone-shaped water filter on top of your other container, which will catch the water.
To give your DIY water filter its first assignment, pour in some water to the device and observe the clear water that passes through into the second container.
Step 7 Making Sure
If you think the filtered water is not clear enough, you can pour it back into the filter a few more times to be sure.
DIY Troubleshooting
If you make your own water filter but encounter problems with it, you can easily fix the problem since you made your own filtration system. Thus, you know its components and how it was built, so it will be easy for you to detect what’s wrong.
To make your own water filter and keep it running continuously, you should double-check the layers to make sure they are correct and properly placed. Then always check that the cotton is securely placed, so that all the minerals are trapped effectively.
Now, you can make your own water filter and effectively filter water at no cost at all.
